Radio (install w/o syc?)

Have any of you installed the metra or scosche radio kit in the 2012 or 2013 but didnt use the sync retention unit. I want to put my radio in but I don't want to spend 130 on the dash kit, another 200 for wiring kit with axxess sync retention box. Has anyone just used a wiring harness with the dash kit and bypassed the sync stuff??
